Martin Awarded $161,500 for Wastewater Lagoon Rehabilitation

PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds says the community of Martin has been awarded $161,500 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to rehabilitate its wastewater lagoon.
“The improvements address issues that are absolutely vital to maintain the integrity of Martin’s primary wastewater treatment ponds,” the Governor says. “I’m pleased to designate funds for this worthwhile project to maintain the quality of life for the residents of Martin.”
The project includes removing sludge from the city’s north sewer lagoons to restore their capacity. After disposal of the sludge, a material made of clay and bentonite will be compacted on the pond floors to prevent seepage.
CDBG is a reimbursement program, and the community will receive the funds as work is completed.
The CDBG program provides communities with financial resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, fire halls, water systems, and sewer systems.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
