Spencer Awarded $200,000 for Wastewater System Improvements
6/28/2010
PIERRE, S.D. - The town of Spencer has been awarded $200,000 to make improvements to its wastewater system through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, Gov. Mike Rounds said today.
“Water and sewer system improvements, such as the changes planned in Spencer, are vital when it comes to maintaining our excellent quality of life in South Dakota,” the Governor said. “I’m pleased to allocate funds for such a worthwhile project.”
Community officials plan to replace the town’s aging sewer line to keep it operational and make improvements to deal with inflows and infiltration of the system. Replacement methods will be based on a video inspection and range from total pipe replacement to installing liner pipe in sewer lines.
CDBG is a reimbursement program, and the community will receive the funds as work is completed.
The CDBG program provides communities with financial resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, fire halls, water systems, and sewer systems.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
