Canistota Awarded Community Development Block Grant

PIERRE – Canistota has been awarded a $232,500 Community Development Block Grant to help upgrade water and wastewater lines.
“Next year, the current water system in Canistota will not be able to handle demand,” Gov. Mike Rounds said. “This project is necessary to make sure the system operates normally and is available for emergency use.”
The $1.2 million project entails replacing the city’s aging water mains with PVC piping, constructing additional water mains, and upgrading deteriorating sewer lines. Current sewer lines are made from clay. They are plagued by tree root intrusion, sagging, and excessive infiltration.
“I am pleased to make these grant funds available to assist Canistota city leaders with this project,” Gov. Rounds said. “Clean water and an efficient wastewater system are necessities for every community. Projects like this help improve the quality of life.”
The CDBG program provides communities with resources to address a wide range of community development needs. Past grants have been used to improve or construct community buildings, fire halls, water systems, and sewer systems.
