Hot Springs awarded Community Development Block Grant

6/27/2008

PIERRE, S.D. — Residents in Fall River and Shannon counties will have access to a better healthcare facility, thanks in part to a $507,500 Community Development Block Grant that was recently awarded to the City of Hot Springs.

“Improving our state’s hospitals and clinics is vital to creating a better quality of life for the residents of South Dakota,” Gov. Mike Rounds said. “The current facility in Hot Springs is in need of some major renovations, and would not be cost effective to upgrade. That’s why replacing the old hospital is the best option.”

The new 15-bed acute care hospital will also house a physician’s outpatient clinic, an emergency room, a pharmacy, a medical laboratory and a dietary department. It will be 43,000 square feet and will replace the current 11-bed facility.

The total project cost will be more than $17 million and will be mostly financed though a bond.

The hospital will serve both Fall River County and Shannon County, which have very limited health care service. Without a facility in Hot Springs, residents would have to travel to Rapid City for their routine health care.

The CDBG program provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Past grants have been used to make improvements to or construct community buildings, fire halls, water systems, and sewer systems.
