Alive and Well in South Dakota

The arts are alive and well in South Dakota. From annual arts festivals, to car shows, to museums, there is always something going on and something to look forward to.

Black Hills Community Theatre – Rapid City
The theater offers quality theatrical productions to the area. Some of the upcoming performances include Amadeus, The Bible: The Complete Word of God, and Cherry Street Players Spring Showcase.

Black Hills Playhouse – Rapid City
The playhouse offers several plays throughout the year. A few plays for 2011 are: Lend Me a Tenor, Joseph, All Shook Up, and The 39 Steps.

Corn Palace – Mitchell
The Corn Palace serves as a multi-use center for the community and region. The facility hosts stage shows, as well as sports events in its arena. The World's Only Corn Palace is an outstanding structure which stands as a tribute to the agricultural heritage of South Dakota.

The Dahl – Rapid City
The Dahl offers a variety of entertainment. They put on art exhibits, musicals, dance performances, theater plays and they offer education and art classes. Some of the upcoming events at the Dahl are MUMPS Concert (Music Unplugged Musical Performance), Guitar Masters, Bluegrass Festival, and Jalan Crossland.

JazzFest: Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival – Sioux Falls
The annual Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival, JazzFest has become a summer favorite in Sioux Falls and the region. JazzFest is a two-day outdoor musical event featuring two stages and is free to the public.

The Journey Museum – Rapid City
The museum is the educated venue that serves as a forum to preserve and explore the heritage of the cultures of the Black Hills region and the knowledge of its natural environment to understand and value our past, enrich our present, and meet the challenges of the future.

Opera Festival - Spearfish
The opera festival is six days of performances and competition held in the month of June. The days are filled with Young Performers Competition, Gala Opening Performance, Master Classes, An Evening of Songs and Dance, Opera Scenes, and Opera Evening.

Redlin Art Center - Watertown
Over 150 of Terry Redlin’s original oil paintings hang in the impressive building built by his family to display all of Terry’s paintings.

River City Racin’ - Chamberlain
Come feel the thunder as Chamberlain-Oacoma hosts the Missouri River's only hydroplane boat racing event. Only at the Pepsi Racing Power Cup Challenge can you see some of the fastest and most exciting boats battle for points, purse money and pride at speeds reaching 150 mph.

South Dakota Symphony – Sioux Falls
The SDSO has over 90 talented members. Several guest conductors will lead the orchestra through an impressive season of concerts ranging from classics to pops. The orchestra performs all their concerts in the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science and has a season of 10 full orchestra concerts on Saturdays and 5 on Sundays. Plus, there are five chamber concerts and two special event performances.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally – Sturgis
It's Biker Heaven...Each year, Sturgis' Main Street becomes a sea of motorcycles, leather and denim, not to mention, people. Since 1938, Sturgis has welcomed motorcycle enthusiasts from across the United States and around the world to the annual Motorcycle Rally.

The Washington Pavilion – Sioux Falls
The pavilion is divided into four different centers: Performing Arts Center, Visual Arts Center, Science Center and the Cine Dome Theater.

Performing Arts Center: Serves as the home performance venue for the South Dakota Symphony. Some of the upcoming events that will be taking place at the Performing Arts Center are: Jesus Christ Superstar, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Evita, and Movin’ Out.

Visual Arts Center: The Visual Arts Center is made up of six galleries of changing exhibitions featuring local and regional artists, as well as national touring art exhibitions. The galleries include the works of Native American artists, as well as the Raven Industries Children's Studio.
Science Center: Is a regional hands-on science experience.
Cine Done Theater: The incredibly realistic images shown on our 60-foot domed screen make audiences feel as though they are part of the action. 10,000 watts blast through 24 speakers on 6 channels of digital audio sound. Different films are featured every season. Films average 45 minutes and are shown on the hour. Cry room, special needs seating and assisted listening devices are available.

South Dakota’s wine industry is growing. Many of our state’s wineries offer tours and tastings throughout the year.
