State, Governor to Promote Bioscience Industry at Annual BIO Convention

Monday, June 15, 2015

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard will lead a delegation of state officials to Philadelphia, Pa., this week to promote South Dakota’s growing bioscience industry at the annual BIO International Convention. This is Gov. Daugaard’s fifth consecutive year attending the BIO International Convention. The conference begins tomorrow, Tuesday, June 16, and goes until Thursday, June 18.

“I am looking forward to attending the convention so that we can promote the progress South Dakota’s biotech industry has made in the last few years,” said Gov. Daugaard. “South Dakota has world-class research facilities, an educated workforce and a premier business climate – all of which make our state an appealing destination for biotechnology businesses.”

In September 2014, BIO (Biotechnology Industry Organization) International recognized South Dakota’s commitment to the biotechnology industry and chose to hold the annual BIO Livestock Summit in Sioux Falls. During the event, Gov. Daugaard was recognized as the first-ever Food & Ag Governor of the Year.

Gov. Daugaard has been invited to speak at the Food & Ag Day Kickoff event, held on Tuesday, June 16, where he’ll be recognized as the 2014 Food & Ag Governor of the Year. That same day, he will serve on a panel of governors to discuss the importance of supporting growth in the biotechnology industry and using innovation as a tool for reinvigorating state economies and creating quality jobs.

Two South Dakota companies, Nanofiber Separation and SynZyme Technologies, are also being recognized by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health during the conference.
