Governor Invites Business Leaders to Join Him on Trade Mission to China

FOR RELEASE: Wednesday, January 2, 2013

PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Daugaard is inviting South Dakota business leaders to join him on his second trade mission to China April 5-12, 2013.

The Governor had the opportunity to lead a similar trade mission last spring.

“One area of focus for my office has been increasing our state’s exports, which in turn will help grow South Dakota’s economy through job creation,” said Gov. Daugaard. “We are returning to China because the Chinese market offers South Dakota businesses tremendous potential for growth.”

Governor’s Office of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Costello and South Dakota Agriculture Secretary Walt Bones will represent their departments on the trade mission.

“Our office recognizes exporting’s role in growing South Dakota’s economy,” said Commissioner Costello. “With 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power outside of the United States, South Dakota companies will benefit from exploring new markets.”

“China has a huge demand for importing food and feed,” said South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Walt Bones. “South Dakota’s agriculture businesses are well positioned to supply China the products they need.”

Companies interested in exporting to China are invited to apply. Preference will be given to companies within the Value Added-Ag, Manufacturing, Biosciences, Professional Business Services and Energy industries.

Up to 15 companies will be selected to accompany the Governor and will be eligible for partial reimbursement of cost after the trade mission.

Please click HERE to apply or visit www.sdreadytowork.com for more information about the upcoming trade mission. Applications must be completed prior to Feb. 1. and companies will be notified no later than Feb. 8.

The trade missions have been made possible through a State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) grant awarded to South Dakota by the Small Business Administration.
