Prairie Aquatech Breaks Ground on $60 Million Facility in Volga

Prairie AquaTech, an aquaculture company that makes high-quality plant protein, broke ground on its new facility last week in Volga, 5 miles west of Brookings. The facility will be 300,000 square feet and is a $60 million project.

"This is really a great project for South Dakota," said GOED Commissioner Scott Stern. "Prairie AquaTech is a home-grown company that touches on three of the four of the state's targeted industries - bioscience, manufacturing and value-added ag. They are on their way to becoming leaders of the industry, and helping to feed the world."

Aquaculture, or fish production is the fastest growing market segment in U.S. and global agriculture, and now exceeds beef production in total tons produced on a global basis.

Business Development Team Gearing Up to Blitz Illinois

GOED is preparing to make a trip to Illinois later this month in hopes of attracting more businesses to South Dakota.

"Illinois is a state that is in a much different place than South Dakota, speaking economically, fiscally, and regulatory," said GOED Commissioner Scott Stern.
"Our hope is that we can show companies that may be struggling, or may just be unhappy with the tax and business climate, that there are better, more business friendly locations for them to run their companies."

Staff at GOED are busy making contacts, lining up appointments and making other arrangements for the trip.

"We have done similar trips like this in the past, namely in Minnesota," Stern said. "That method has proven successful, so we thought we would expand our reach this year."
