State Concentrating on Value-Added Agriculture, Biosciences in Coming Months

GOED's business development team is hitting the road the next few months and visiting various locations to work on business recruitment in the value-added agriculture and bioscience industries.

"The biosciences and value-added agriculture are two industries that make a great deal of sense for South Dakota," said GOED Commissioner Scott Stern. "Our state has a long-standing history as an agricultural state, and our small size allows for collaboration opportunities in the biosciences that you just don't find in every state."

GOED representatives will be visiting the following cities:
  • Chicago Area, May 21-25
  • Des Moines, June 6-9
  • Boston, June 4-7
  • Philadelphia, July 16-19

Agropur Breaks Ground on Lake Norden, S.D., Facility

From left, Keith Braun, Agropur,  and Ben Stout, Riverview LLP, break ground on Agropur's new facility in Lake Norden, S.D.
The dairy industry is alive and well in South Dakota! Earlier this month, Gov. Dennis Daugaard, along with many key partners, helped Agropur celebrate its significant expansion of its dairy plant in Lake Norden, S.D. Coupled with the expansion that Valley Queen Cheese in Milbank, S.D., has in the works, we are  seeing the state's capacity in dairy processing increase.

The Agropur expansion will create the need for 85,000 additional dairy cows. This is in addition to the 119,000 milking cows the currently in South Dakota.

This is fantastic news for South Dakota's dairy industry. For the past couple of years, dairy plants have been at capacity, making it difficult for additional production to take place. Now, both existing South Dakota processors who want to make investments in their operations and out-of-state producers interested in investing in South Dakota, will be able to do so.
