A progressive mindset and can-do attitude has brought the 1,100-resident rural community of De Smet, S.D., to the forefront in terms of economic development. The community, birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder, recently welcomed two new manufacturing businesses, American Engineered Products Inc. and Sheyenne Dakota Inc. Through SDI alone De Smet workers have approximately 30 new job opportunities. Based on 2010 population comparisons, De Smet’s job growth is equivalent to 4,329 new jobs in nearby Sioux Falls. Motorcycle Parts Manufacturer Coming to Sturgis
A California-based custom motorcycle parts manufacturer's relocation to Sturgis could bring 30 jobs to the Northern Hills community. Samson Exhaust has started construction on a 45,000 square foot building in the Sturgis Industrial Park. The relocation project is expected to be completed by April 2013 and will create 30 new jobs to start, said Pat Kurtenbach, Sturgis Economic Development Corporation President.

Brookings 'Fish Plant' Expands, Doubling in Size

That could be one assumption, judging from the fact that the city's own "fish plant," Prairie AquaTech, needs more room to grow at the Brookings Research and Technology Center. Brookings City Council last week inked a new lease with the startup fish-food company, effectively doubling its space in the city-owned research center on 32nd Avenue.

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has attended BIO during both of his years in office. He held more than a dozen meetings with companies during his two days in Boston in June. "Last year, I was feeling my way around a bit, but this year we have a rigorous schedule with CEOs of startups and existing biotech companies from J&J down to entrepreneurs who are investigating the location for a clinical trial or a manufacturing site," Daugaard says. "We are going every hour, on the hour, meeting with people, talking about South Dakota as a location. We have a couple of companies close to making announcements, but that's theirs to make. They are looking at something, so that makes me very hopeful."
