McLaughlin Receives Grant to Rehabilitate Wastewater System

Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011
PIERRE, S.D. –McLaughlin’s wastewater collection system will soon get an upgrade, thanks in part to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) approved this week by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

The Governor awarded McLaughlin $412,000 in CDBG funds to replace and rehabilitate its current wastewater collection system. The community is experiencing a number of issues with the system, including back-ups, erosion, and lift station malfunctions.

“Communities absolutely need a safe and adequate wastewater system,” said Gov. Daugaard. “This project will help ensure that McLaughlin residents are afforded this basic necessity.”

Through this project, two lift stations will be replaced, a treatment cell will be relined and reshaped, more than 18,700 feet of pipe will be upgraded, curbs and gutters will be repaired, and more than 130 manholes will be relined. Construction is expected to begin next spring.

CDBG is a reimbursement program, and McLaughlin will receive funds as work is completed.

The program provides communities with financial resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems.

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
