Hurley Receives Grant to Improve Wastewater System

Monday, January 23, 2012
PIERRE, S.D. – Hurley’s sanitary sewer system is receiving an upgrade, thanks in part to a federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) approved this week by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

The Governor awarded Hurley $308,522 in CDBG funds to rehabilitate its sanitary sewer system. Much of the sewage collection system is 90 years old.

“Hurley’s aging system is experiencing groundwater infiltration, and that is causing inefficiencies,” Gov. Daugaard said. “This upgrade will lead to cost and energy savings for the community. I’m pleased the state can provide resources for this worthwhile endeavor.”

The project, expected to be complete in the fall of 2013, includes replacing 6,550 feet of pipe and relining another 1,480 feet.

CDBG is a reimbursement program, and Hurley will receive funds as work is completed.

The CDBG program provides communities and counties with financial resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems.

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
