Monday, January 23, 2012PIERRE, S.D. – Hoven’s water distribution and storage system is receiving an upgrade, thanks in part to a federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) approved by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. The Governor awarded Hoven $412,000 in CDBG funds to replace water lines and meters, and to construct a ground water-storage tank. “Hoven has sustained a number of water-line collapses in recent years,” Gov. Daugaard said. “I’m pleased the state has the resources to help the community build a reliable water system.” The project, expected to start this spring, includes replacing all of the community’s aging water lines. Many are more than 60 years old, failing and filled with mineral buildup. The project also includes replacing all of Hoven’s water meters with a modern system, and constructing a 140,000-gallon groundwater storage tank to accommodate summer water demands. CDBG is a reimbursement program, and Hoven will receive funds as work is completed. The CDBG program provides communities and counties with financial resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it. -30-
