Centerville Receives Grant for Sewer Upgrade

Friday, October 21, 2011
PIERRE, S.D. – The community of Centerville will soon have a more efficient sewer system, thanks in part to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) approved this week by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

The Governor awarded Centerville with $309,000 in CDBG funds to rehabilitate more than 22,600 linear feet of sanitary sewer line. The grant will also help pay for the rehabilitation of 10 manholes.

Centerville’s current system was constructed in 1939.

“Centerville’s sewer system suffers from numerous cracks, broken segments and has roots growing into the pipes,” said Gov. Daugaard. “This upgrade will lead to cost and energy savings for the community and more efficient wastewater treatment.”

CDBG is a reimbursement program, and Centerville will receive funds as work is completed.

The program provides communities with financial resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems.

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
