PIERRE, S.D. – Brown County has been awarded $515,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding on behalf of the Aberdeen Family YMCA to assist in constructing its youth development center, Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today.
The 25,000-square-foot facility will be licensed to care for 360 children. The Aberdeen Family YMCA currently has a day-care center; however, the building needs repairs, and there is no room to expand. There are currently 90 children in after-school care and 110 in day care.
“Providing a safe and healthy environment for our children is essential,” Gov. Daugaard said. “The YMCA’s new youth development center will help meet this need in Brown County.”
Officials estimate that the new center will take about eight months to construct and cost $3,486,400.
CDBG is a reimbursement program, and Brown County will receive funds as work is completed.
The CDBG program provides communities and counties with financial resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
