Friday, October 21, 2011PIERRE, S.D. – Brule County, in partnership with the Missouri Valley Crisis Center, is constructing a new domestic violence shelter with the help of a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) approved this week by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. The Governor awarded Brule County with $257,500 in CDBG funds to construct a residential facility in Chamberlain to serve as a temporary shelter for victims of domestic abuse. The current structure is nearly100 years old, is deteriorating, and lacks modern security features. “A safe and clean environment is vital for those in need,” said Gov. Daugaard. “I’m pleased to provide resources to help domestic violence victims avoid abusive situations.” The new shelter is scheduled to be complete next fall and will have six bedrooms, a living room, dining area, office space, and modern security features. CDBG is a reimbursement program, and Brule County will receive funds as work is completed. The program provides communities and counties with financial resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it. -30-
