PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has awarded Brown County a $164,500 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to expand workforce training programs in northeastern South Dakota.
Brown County will join Northeast Work and Technical Education Center and the Aberdeen Development Corporation in developing distance classroom instruction at Lake Area Technical Institute and hands-on training at Mitchell Technical Institute for people seeking the necessary skills for employment in the welding field.
“A skilled workforce is essential for community development,” Gov. Daugaard said. “There is a strong demand for welders, and this is a valuable program for northeastern South Dakota.”
The training program is set to run for six to eight weeks and will consist of hands-on welding, integrated shop math, and print-reading application.
CDBG is a reimbursement program, and the communities receive funds as work is finished.
The CDBG program provides communities and counties with financial resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
